Economic development is measured in investments, businesses launched, jobs created and opportunities expanded. But communicating those results effectively requires more than a collection of numbers.
The Mission Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) took a new approach to telling that story through its Mission in Motion 2025 Annual Report — a document designed to demonstrate progress, build trust and connect businesses, residents and partners with the work MEDC has completed across the community.

The 2025 report is the second produced under MEDCs current leadership and builds on the previous year’s Building Momentum theme.

The purpose of Mission in Motion was straightforward: give the community and MEDC stakeholders a clear, accessible picture of economic development activity and its results. To accomplish that, MEDC brought together performance metrics — including job creation, capital investment, program participation and business growth — with the stories of the people and businesses behind those numbers. The resulting report demonstrates the breadth of economic development activity in Mission.

The report also takes the important step of supplementing the organization’s impressive numbers – 29 small businesses received $425,000 in investment, for example, and BR&E efforts supported the development of the largest pickleball and paddle facility in South Texas – to include real-world stories that brought those numbers to life. Those stories gave the numbers context and meaning and helped answer a question that economic development reports sometimes struggle to address: What do these numbers actually mean for the community?

The report incorporates QR codes that connect readers to videos, program highlights, ribbon cuttings and community events. This creates a more engaging relationship with the audience. Readers can absorb the key takeaway quickly or choose to explore the story behind it.

From Annual Report to Economic Development Tool

The report was intentionally developed as more than an annual recap. Its data and stories provide MEDC with a concise resource for communicating Mission's economic strengths and priorities to prospective businesses, investors, existing businesses, community stakeholders and residents.

For site selectors and investors, the report provides a snapshot of measurable performance. For local businesses, it highlights programs, incentives and resources available through MEDC. For residents and community partners, it illustrates how economic development investment translates into opportunities throughout Mission. In that sense, the report has become part of MEDC's broader business recruitment, retention and engagement strategy.

The information can also be repurposed for presentations, digital campaigns, media outreach and stakeholder communications, extending the value of the report well beyond its publication.

A Model That Can Travel

Although the report reflects Mission's unique characteristics — including its cross-border relationships and international partnerships — the underlying approach can be applied by communities of virtually any size.
The framework is simple: identify meaningful measures, connect those measures to real stories, and present both in a way people can understand and use.

A community focused on workforce development can emphasize training and talent outcomes. Another might focus on entrepreneurship, business attraction, infrastructure or business retention and expansion.

Mission's experience demonstrates that effective economic development storytelling is not limited to large metropolitan areas or organizations with enormous resources. A community can create a powerful communications platform by organizing its information, establishing a consistent message and being intentional about how results are presented.

More Than a Report

Mission in Motion ultimately makes economic development more visible. It gives stakeholders a clearer understanding of results while providing businesses and investors with useful information. It creates a resource that can be used throughout the year. And it connects data to the people, businesses and partnerships that make those results possible.

Most importantly, it reinforces a consistent message about Mission: economic opportunity is being created intentionally, partnerships are producing measurable results, and the community is moving forward.
The annual report may document a year's worth of work, but its real value lies in what it enables next — greater awareness, stronger engagement, continued investment and a clearer understanding of Mission's economic development story.
