Tamara Lowney believes in the power of economic development. She’s intimately aware that the success of rural economic development depends on a thriving and diverse local business sector. As president of the Itasca Economic Development Corporation, she has had to think outside the traditional economic development box to drive growth in these unique times.
Tamara led and supported several innovative programs this year. One in particular, originally a media campaign to share accurate and factual information about the pandemic, quickly turned into a county-wide movement of hope, inspiration, and support: Itasca Strong. Area residents and businesses showed their support by hanging banners from windows and storefronts, purchase details to proudly display on their cars, and created special offers to maintain some level of normalcy. This campaign ultimately drove business in an unprecedented time and created a sense of place within the community.
Tamara was also instrumental in implementing an aggressive strategic action plan to recruit a new manufacturer to rural Bigfork Minnesota, advocating for Cares Act dollars to be allocated to assist businesses and assisting Grand Rapids Economic Development Development Authority administer their emergency working capital loan program.
