On Thursday, September 17, 2020, the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and East Metro Chamber partners hosted the annual Leaders in Local Government Awards Ceremony. The Chamber honored five organizations that exemplified and demonstrated innovation, excellence, and success in local government. Nominees were selected based on the contributions with respect to innovative initiatives and public policies that advance the public good and demonstrate a commitment to efficient and progressive government.
Ramsey County, MN was selected as the winner for "Communications & Marketing." In late 2019, Ramsey County launched www.RamseyCountyMeansBusiness.com to attract and retain businesses to the region. The site offered the first incentives dashboard layering development programs and incentives across city-county-state jurisdictions and identified key redevelopment properties across the county, linking them to various redevelopment initiatives available. Just a few months later, the world came to a halt due to COVID-19. RamseyCountyMeansBusiness.com became the landing spot for real-time information. The premise around the incentives dashboard was replicated for a recovery dashboard allowing the business community to quickly identify business relief resources and technical assistance through the myriad of government programs available.
In addition, Saint Paul - Ramsey County Public Health's COVID-19 Hmong/Karen Community Outreach & Public Information and Communications Teams have been instrumental to the businesses and community members in Ramsey County's ability to learn about COVID-19 and access resources. They helped reformat/design the weekly newsletters that are sent out to all communities including Hmong/Karen organizations and individuals. The team took the initiative to print and laminate social distance flyers and personally delivered them to small businesses, organizations, and churches. The team help activated free test sites and planned effective measures to increase testing in BIPOC community members by working directly with BIPOC organizations and leaders.
Finally, Ramsey County's Workforce Solutions & Saint Paul Public Library won the Innovation award. In response to the unexpected and historic economic recession caused by COVID-19, Ramsey County Workforce Solutions and Saint Paul Public Library launched a new service, Community Career Labs, at four Saint Paul libraries. The Community Career Labs provide reservation-based computer access, printing and copying, digital literacy programs, job search and resume assistance, and other workforce support programs through 2020. Sites follow public health guidelines to maintain safety for the community and staff. these labs help bridge the digital divide for those without ready access to technology and provide critical job services for our neighbors and families who need it the most.
Congratulations to the Ramsey County team!
