A monthly video series seeks to help town and county leaders in Appalachian communities share ideas and boost economic development.

The project, “Save Our Towns,” is headed by the Virginia Tech Office of Outreach and International Affairs.

Starting Aug. 1, a 10-minute video will be shared with leaders in 25 counties from Highland County to Lee County, said Keith Pierce, who works in the office.

“It started as an economic development project,” he said. “This was a great way to do something proactive. ... It’s just a resource, but it’s a vital resource. We hope to connect with people working to revitalize their towns.”

The videos will feature several segments, including an expert in politics at Virginia Tech or someone else versed in economic development, as well as a spotlight on some communities that have done well recently.

Whitney Bonham, an economic development specialist at VT, will present the “examples of awesome segments” highlighting local communities. One of the first is Big Stone Gap, which recently hosted the filming of a movie by the same name.
