BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. - The Belle Fourche, S.D., Economic Development Corp. is planning an $8.4 million terminal to load and unload rail cars in the city’s new industrial park.
Ryan Kavan, city engineer, says the facility initially will be able to load gondolas or boxcars and bulk shipping of agricultural products from South Dakota and North Dakota.
The project includes 15,000 feet of track and a covered warehouse for crane-loading and unloading, Mayor Gary Hendrickson tells Agweek. The nearest similar transload facilities are in western North Dakota, western Manitoba and Nebraska. The initial phase wouldn’t allow container shipping, but it is possible down the line, Kavan says.
Hendrickson says the city has $1 million already available for the project, left over from a $2.3 million industrial park project. The city council has approved applications for several state, federal and private grants.
