When it comes to attracting new business, the Lehigh Valley is No. 2 with a bullet.

The region has achieved its highest mark in Site Selection magazine's annual economic development rankings, coming in second in its size category for 2013 to the Omaha, Neb.-Council Bluffs, Iowa region in attracting new employers and helping companies expand.

The Lehigh Valley competes against metro areas ranging from 200,000 to 1 million in population. Last year, it ranked ninth in its category. This year's ranking tied with Baton Rouge, La., and marks its sixth consecutive year in the Top 10.

The magazine counted 46 Lehigh Valley expansion or relocation projects of greater than $1 million in investment in 2013, just two behind Omaha-Council Bluffs' 48 projects. That also ranked the Lehigh Valley fourth overall in the Northeast, tied with the much larger Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro area.
