Study says solar business incubator good for area economies

While a number of solar-related businesses already have taken root in New Mexico, a study funded by local governments in the central part of the state says more could be done to grow the industry here.

Specifically, the report says the idea of a solar business incubator has a lot of economic development promise for the region.

Released Wednesday by the Mid-Region Council of Governments, the study reinforces what renewable energy and solar advocates long have asserted: Solar energy makes good sense for New Mexico, where the number of solar installations is booming.

With an average of 300 sunny days a year, solar energy is a product on which the state could further capitalize, the study says. But fostering more solar enterprises in New Mexico also has challenges, such as the distance from major markets and the lack of a large population or major industrial center.
